Choosing Granite for Countertop Surface Finishes

When choosing a colour for your granite kitchen countertop, you will also need to select the surface finish you want to display in your home. Ensuring it complements your existing paint, flooring, and cabinets will help pull your interior design layout together. There are three main types of finishes: polished, honed, and satin. Not all granite colours are available in all three of these finishes.

Polished Finish

The polished finish, a classic choice, is the image that comes to mind when most people think of granite countertops. Polished granite has a glossy and smooth finish that reflects the light. This helps hide fingerprints and makes cleaning the surface of the countertop as easy as wiping it down.

Honed

Sometimes referred to as a matte finish, the honed granite finish is also smooth, but is non-reflective. This means that the oil from your fingerprints is likely to show, especially on darker countertops. If you decide on a honed finish, be prepared to spot-clean fingerprints on a regular basis. This is not the case with lighter-colored honed finishes.

Satin

The satin finish is also referred to as a leather finish. This non-reflective, textured finish is distinctive, and quite popular for kitchen islands. One thing to keep in mind when it comes to the satin finish is that food preparation may require additional cleanup, as small particles of flour, seeds, and liquid droplets can become trapped in the grooves.

A honed or satin finish may add to the uniqueness of your granite countertops versus the traditional glossy finish. The colour you select may also play a role in determining which finish will look best in your home.
